BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the rule of law and good governance have completely vanished from the country. He added, through the sham election on January 7, the Awami ruling clique has become more reckless, authoritarian, and oppressive. The occupying government has unleashed a sword of oppression against the BNP and the like-minded organizations, as well as other democratic opposition parties and people with differing opinions and paths, in order to maintain its illegitimate hold on power. The continuation of Awami oppression includes incidents where bail is denied and individuals are sent to prison.
In a statement sent to the media on Monday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern about several cases. He highlighted the politically motivated and wrongful imprisonment of Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, president of the central committee of Jubo Dal, and SM Obaidul Haq Nasir, a member of the national executive committee of BNP, who were both denied bail and sent to prison. He also mentioned the denial of bail to Sohel Hosnain Kaykobad, joint general secretary of the BNP in Kurigram district, and other leaders, as well as former student leader Saddam Hossain of the Rajshahi district Jubo Dal, who were also imprisoned.
He stated that the absence of the rule of law and good governance in the country is the reason why leaders and activists engaged in the democratic struggle are being deprived of justice. By imprisoning opposition leaders and activists, the entire country has been turned into a prison. A pervasive chaos has spread throughout the country, and the Awami illegal ruling clique is spreading fear and terror everywhere from cities to villages.
