India is our “political friend,” and China “development friend”: Quader

Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the ruling Awami League party and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, underscored the significance of China's partnership in Bangladesh's development efforts.

During a fruit fair event on Bailey Road, organized by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Quader stated, "India is our political friend, and China is our development friend."

He reaffirmed that the current government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, continues to uphold the foreign policy principle of "friendship to all, malice towards none," established by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Quader highlighted the enduring bond between Bangladesh and India, emphasizing India's crucial role in Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.

He stated, "India is our tested friend from 1971. Our relationship is tied by the bloodshed during the war," referencing the assistance provided by Indian soldiers and the subsequent resolution of border disputes.

Quader expressed optimism that any outstanding issues with India would be resolved through amicable dialogue, dismissing opposition claims about a "slavery pact" with India.

He questioned the validity of such criticisms, highlighting the tangible benefits gained from the relationship with India.

Regarding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to China, Quader emphasized the significant contributions of Chinese investment in key development projects such as the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, and the Padma Bridge, highlighting the "developmental partnership" between the two nations.

Obaidul Quader recognized Japan's contribution to the metro rail project, emphasizing that Bangladesh welcomes opportunities that foster development, regardless of the source.

He dismissed critics of these collaborations, stating, "Some may be envious, but we cannot ignore these advancements."

Addressing the BNP's accusations that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approaches China with a "begging bowl," Quader refuted these claims, highlighting the hypocrisy of such criticisms.

He reminded the audience that it was the BNP's finance ministers who historically sought foreign aid, and their current grandstanding is merely a facade.

Quader concluded by denouncing the BNP as the ones who "bow down" due to a lack of backbone, asserting that the Awami League, the party of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina, will never compromise its principles or dignity.
