The current parliamentary session has sparked differing opinions. Despite the Awami League's satisfaction with what it perceives as a fair election, many citizens view the intra-Awami League contest as more of a ritual than a genuine electoral process. Despite many voters not going to the polls, individuals still secured positions as MPs and ministers. The parliament is now eagerly awaiting the upcoming session.
In this election, the Awami League secured victory with 223 seats. Their allies, the Bangladesh Workers Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, each obtained one seat. Additionally, the Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat with the support of the Awami League, while the Jatiya Party secured 11 seats.
The independents secured the highest number of seats outside the Awami League, totalling 62. Among these 62 individuals, 59 are leaders affiliated with the Awami League. Almost all of them held party titles but assumed the status of independent candidates following the party chief's instructions, bypassing the official nomination process. Their concern stems from the fear that aligning with the opposition in parliament could jeopardise their control over local politics, as they would not enjoy the same privileges as government party members. Awami League leaders elected as independents are hesitant to relinquish their party positions.
Consequently, they await a decision from Parliament leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina has indicated that most independent parliamentarians would join the Awami League if instructed. In light of this, a call has been extended to independent MPs to attend a meeting at Ganabhaban next Sunday (January 28) at 6:30 pm, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address the matter.
The Jatiya Party is set to assume the role of the opposition party in parliament, a statement echoed by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. GM Quader has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition, Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, and Mujibul Haque Chunnu as the Opposition Whip.
Individual MPs seeking to join political parties or alliances must inform the Election Commission (EC) by January 31. Letters have been sent to parliament members, urging them to express their intentions. Additionally, the EC has directed political party presidents and general secretaries to inform them by January 31 if any non-partisan MP has joined their party or alliance or if their party has formed a coalition with another party for the election to the reserved women's seat.
The President has called for the twelfth National Parliament's inaugural session on January 30. Individual members are invited to the public house, where independent MPs will be allocated ten reserved seats for women. However, there is no consensus among the individual members on allocating these seats. Many public and private discussions are ongoing about the potential trading of nominations for the reserved seats.
Despite being independent, most of these members are leaders of the Awami League. They wish to remain under the Awami League umbrella, and Sheikh Hasina seems inclined to maintain some control over them. These members, who are controlled members of parliament, have been invited to Ganabhaban. The decisions and instructions that unfold in the public building will be revealed on Sunday night.
