Approximately 600 Jatiya Party (JaPa) leaders and activists have tendered their resignations, citing allegations of arbitrariness against party chairman GM Quader and general secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu. They announced their resignation at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Thursday, January 25. At the same time, leaders and activists from different units of Dhaka North Metropolis also indicated that JaPa should be scrutinised again.
The resigned activists alleged that he had unilaterally promised elections before assuming the role of the party chairman. He reiterated this stance in numerous speeches and media statements at various events, leading them to place trust in his strong words against the government. As the election drew near, it became apparent that he had colluded with the government to safeguard his interests. Although candidates were nominated for 300 seats, he sold the party to the Awami League in exchange for 26 seats. Consequently, the Jatiya Party experienced a severe defeat in the election.
Jahangir Alam Pathan, the former member secretary of the Central Committee, asserted that dedicated activists and supporters vehemently protested against the Chairman-General Secretary. The demand for his resignation originated from the grassroots level. Despite the crisis, the chairman has systematically dismissed the party's dedicated life leaders. He is allegedly formulating a sinister plan to erase the name of Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
GM Quader, seemingly unresponsive to the protest language of the members, responded by terminating party co-chairman Kazi Feroze Rashid, Presidium member Sunil Shubrai, Presidium member Shafiqul Islam Sentu, and vice chairman Yahia Chowdhury. Additionally, some leaders have been verbally informed about their resignation.
The written statement claims that "during the countrywide COVID-19 epidemic, 25 police stations and 54 wards of Dhaka city were effectively managed under the leadership of Dhaka Metropolitan North convener Sentu. The dismissal of this dedicated leader without any reason or notice is deemed unethical. In this critical situation, there is a collective desire to prevent the destruction of the Jatiya Party, founded by the beloved leader 'Palli Bandhu' Ershad, by remaining within the organisation led by GM Quader. As a response to this, we hereby publicly announce the resignation of GM Quader from the organisation. We assure you that in a short period, we will come together, inspired by Ershad's spirit, and work towards realising his ideals. We are confident in our victory on the path of truth. Inshallah!"
