Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the independent parliamentarians, stating, "It is a significant achievement that everyone has returned to us after being away. Your presence in the parliament is crucial, and I encourage you to fulfil your duties." She conveyed this message during a meeting with independent members of parliament elected in the 12th national parliament election at Ganabhaban on Sunday evening.
The President of the Awami League urged independent parliamentarians to participate actively in the legislative process, emphasising, "We expect you to implement the promises made to the people during your election. Your role in parliament is crucial, and we have confidence in your ability to fulfil your duties."
Several parliamentarians shared their perspectives with reporters after the discussion with Sheikh Hasina. AK Azad, an Independent Member of Parliament elected from Faridpur-3, stated, "While we may not have the party's backing, we hold various positions within the party and have responsibilities. Despite being independent members of parliament, we've communicated the challenges we face in our constituencies. We advocate for unity, much like within the party."
He further mentioned, "The Prime Minister advised us to act as independent, assuring that there would be no issues. She likened us to her right and left hands. Those who did not secure the party nomination will find more opportunities for discussion and criticism in the parliament."
Khasru Chowdhury, the Member of Parliament representing Dhaka-18 Constituency, expressed, "I conveyed to the Prime Minister that if we continue to carry the label of independence, it becomes challenging to function seamlessly within the party's framework, and this difficulty persists."
He highlighted the diverse opinions circulating among the people and sought the Prime Minister's perspective on the matter. In response, she reassured, "As independents, we will have more opportunities to express our views compared to party parliamentarians."
Member of Parliament Mohiuddin Maharaj stated, "All 62 independent members of parliament have asserted that we are affiliated with the Awami League. We desire to remain within the Awami League and continue under the leadership of the Prime Minister." He further mentioned that the Prime Minister acknowledged their affiliation, affirming, "You are members of the Awami League; you belong to the Awami League."
It is understood that independent candidates have the authority to nominate 10 individuals for reserved women's seats. However, instead of following the conventional nomination process, individual parliamentarians have delegated the responsibility of selecting candidates for these seats to the Prime Minister.
Sixty-two independent candidates won the 12th National Assembly elections on January 7. Among them, 58 are leaders at various levels within the Awami League, functioning as dummy candidates with the party's approval. This strategic move, sanctioned by the party, allowed them to participate effectively in the parliamentary elections.
