Awami League nets Tk 4 crore on first day of reserved seat forms sales

The Awami League has garnered interest from women across various professions, including politicians seeking reserved seats for Members of Parliament. On Tuesday, the first day of the party's nomination forms sale, the Awami League sold 810 nomination forms, generating an income of 4 crore 5 lakh taka. Each form cost 50 thousand taka, and the party maintained this price for general and reserved seats.

There are 50 reserved seats for women in the Bangladesh Parliament. Additionally, 62 independent parliamentarians have delegated the authority to elect members to the reserved seats to Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Consequently, the Awami League will be able to allocate 48 reserved female MPs to their party and independents. At the same time, the Jatiya Party (JaPa) will provide female parliamentarians for the remaining two seats.

The sale of nomination forms commenced at the Awami League's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka at 10 am on Tuesday and concluded at 4 pm. Sayem Khan, the Secretary of Awami League, informed the media that most forms were sold in the Dhaka Division, with 275 forms sold. Chittagong Division followed with 149 forms, Rajshahi with 90, Khulna with 77, Barisal with 56, Sylhet Division with 26, Rangpur with 75, and Mymensingh Division with 62.

In addition to party leaders and workers, media celebrities have also applied for nomination forms. Reportedly, Apu Biswas, Nipun Akhter, Sohana Saba, and Tanveen are among those who have applied.

Meanwhile, the election for the reserved women's seats is scheduled for March 14, as the Election Commission (EC) announced on February 6. EC Secretary Jahangir Alam declared the schedule following a commission meeting held at the Agargaon election building in the capital.

Per the announced schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is Sunday, February 18, from 9 am to 4 pm. Nomination paper selection will take place on February 19 and 20. Appeals can be filed until February 22, and their resolution is scheduled for February 24. The final date for withdrawing candidature is February 25, with symbol allocation set for February 27. Voting will occur on March 14 from 8 am to 4 pm.

According to the law, reserved seats for women are distributed based on the seats won in the general elections. Parties nominate only the candidates they receive from their respective divisions. As a result, polling is usually unnecessary in reserved-seat elections. Party nominees are declared winners only after the candidature withdrawal deadline has passed.

The Election Commission announced the schedule for women's seats within a month of the National Assembly elections held on January 7.
