Mirza Abbas released from jail

Mirza Abbas, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, was released after spending 111 days in prison. He was released from Keraniganj Central Jail at 6:50 pm on Monday, February 19.

Upon his release, Mirza Abbas addressed reporters, expressing his commitment to continuing the democracy movement. He stressed that all other activists still in detention should be released. He likened them to vital components essential for the functioning of a party. He urged the government to ensure the proper treatment of leaders and jail workers.

Earlier the same day, Mirza Abbas was granted bail in a case filed by the Dhaka Railway Police. Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Zulhas Uddin granted him bail on a surety of Tk 10,000 after the hearing, effectively granting him bail in all 11 cases stemming from the BNP's general meeting on October 28.

Upon hearing the news of Mirza Abbas's bail, BNP leaders and activists gathered in front of the Keraniganj Central Jail. After his release, they surrounded the car carrying him, chanting slogans.

Mirza Abbas had faced 11 cases filed against him on October 28 of the previous year. He was arrested by the detective police from Shahid Bagh in Dhaka on the night of October 31 in connection with the sabotage of Shahjahanpur Police Station under the explosives Act. The following day, on November 1, the court granted him a five-day remand. He was sent to prison afterwards on November 5, where he remained until his recent release.
