Dr Yunus's institutions being occupied chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans

The occupiers are attempting to seize control of Grameen Telecom, Grameen Bank, and eight institutions associated with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Dr. Yunus, chanting the slogan "Jai Bangla." The occupation commenced on February 12 and continues under the supervision of local Awami League leaders and members. This information was gathered through conversations with residents and businessmen in the area of Yunus Center, situated on Mirpur Zoo Road in the capital city of Dhaka. However, individuals hesitate to speak out publicly due to apprehension of repercussions.

Saturday being a weekend, all institutions, including Grameen Telecom and Yunus Centre, were closed. By 4:30 pm on February 12, as such, those who typically engage in occupying the institutions there were absent. Nonetheless, nearby residents and traders were present. Bangla Outlook interviewed a businessman near Yunus Center at the Rainkhola Road junction. The individual's name is withheld for security reasons, as most participants in the occupation around Yunus Center are associated with various organisations of the local ruling party.

The businessman reported that around 4:30 pm on February 12th, approximately 15 to 20 unidentified individuals attempted to enter the telecom building. Staff at Yunus Centre sought to ascertain their identity, but the staff's inquiries were disregarded. Among them, Colonel Rashed, who claimed to be a Grameen Bank official, proceeded to the Grameen Kalyan and Grameen Telecom offices. At 4:34 pm, they entered the office, crossing the security rooms.

At the same time, a Grameen Kalyan officer informed Bangla Outlook that they scrutinised the identity cards of various office staff upon entry. Office personnel were prohibited from leaving even after office hours. The officer also lamented that the intruders used reprehensible language toward the two organisations' employees. The unauthorised intruders, led by Colonel Rashid, remained at the Kalyan and Telecom offices until 9:30 pm.

Earlier in the evening, the individuals led by Colonel Rashed proceeded to the offices of the managing directors of Grameen Telecom and Grameen Kalyan, holding separate meetings. Around 7:30 pm, the occupiers departed, leaving behind two representatives. They indicated that there had been a change in the board of directors of these two institutions, and a representative bearing the office order was en route. Subsequently, at 9:10 pm, the unknown individuals locked the office gate and departed, mentioning that the office would reopen at 10 am the following day, February 13.

On the morning of February 13, 18-20 group representatives arrived and unlocked the gate, but they remained outside Yunus Centre without entering the office. They sent a letter that day stating the removal of Professor Dr Yunus from Grameen Kalyan and Telecom and the addition of 2 new board members.

Around 8:30 am on February 15, individuals affiliated with the local ruling party and some women assembled in front of the office, preventing Yunus Center staff from entering. Witnesses observed these individuals chanting "Jai Bangla."

Ratan Das, a resident of the area for about 15 years, noted that many present that day belonged to the local ruling political party Awami League. He mentioned that several leaders and activists from Mirpur Bangla College arrived by bus and observed cash being distributed to the women participants. Approximately 300 to 400 individuals affiliated with the ruling party were present. Ratan Das also reported harassment towards individuals taking photos and videos of the protest with their mobile phones. By 11 am, all disruptors had dispersed.

Although police had barricaded the Rainkhola junction since morning, tea shopkeeper Jalal Mia stated that no one obstructed the disruptors at the front of Yunus Center. Instead, some police officers engaged in dialogue with the disruptor and shared tea.

Yunus Center workers expressed dissatisfaction, mentioning that a press conference was scheduled for the 15th. They claimed that residents chanting slogans since morning had created a climate of fear, thereby disrupting the event. They further asserted that no members of the Grameen Family were involved in this movement or process.

According to several workers at the Yunus Center, a pervasive sense of fear has gripped them since February 15th. None of the nearly 800 employees feel secure in the current situation.

On February 13, after their complaint on the 12th, the Managing Director of Grameen Kalyan, AKM Mainuddin Chowdhury, submitted a written application for a general diary at Shah Ali police station. However, the police did not accept the complaint. Instead, they found no evidence of such incidents upon inspection or claimed they did not occur.

It's worth noting that in 2011, Nobel Prize-winning Professor Dr Yunus stepped down as Managing Director of Grameen Bank. Since then, an acting managing director has been in place until the government appointed Khandaker Mozammel Haque. Following Haque's passing on August 8, 2019, the government appointed AKM Saiful Majid.

Since then, a cycle of turmoil has affected eight institutions, including Grameen Kalyan and Telecom. Allegations of direct support and cooperation from the authorities have been widely circulated. However, the state-sponsored processes are instilling various fears among the workers.

Despite these allegations, AKM Saiful Majid has denied any involvement, asserting that all actions are being carried out in a regulatory manner.
