Awami League has traditionally been an anti-democratic force: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir vehemently condemned and protested the arrest of Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, former general secretary of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association.

In a statement, the BNP Secretary General asserted that the Awami League has traditionally been an anti-democratic force, engaging in perpetuating power through false promises to the people. He highlighted the party's destruction of constitutional institutions, transforming them into ruins, in a bid to stifle democracy and block various classes and professions from participating in the democratic process.

Mirza Fakhrul accused the Awami League of transforming the state into an oppressive apparatus to silence dissent, pushing the country into a state of anarchy marked by false accusations, arrests, and violent attacks, particularly escalating after the dummy election on January 7.

He further expressed outrage at the arrest of Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal and Barrister Osman Chowdhury, former executive members of the Supreme Court Bar Association, labelling it as a brutal manifestation of government oppression. Not even distinguished lawyers with differing perspectives are spared from this repression, he lamented, emphasising the Awami 'Dummy' Government's attempt to maintain power by instilling fear and panic in society. However, he concluded optimistically, asserting that the collective power of the people will ultimately triumph over such authoritarian tactics.
