Khaleda Zia's treatment abroad and extension of release period requested

An application has been made to the Home Ministry seeking permission to take BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for better treatment and an extension of the conditional stay order of her sentence once more.
Khaleda Zia's younger brother Shamim Iskandar filed this plea noting that her life is in danger.
Earlier, on September 18, 2023, the government extended the conditional stay of Khaleda Zia's sentence by another six months. With this, the suspension period of his sentence was extended eight times.
Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the government granted Khaleda Zia's temporary release on March 25, 2020 through an executive order suspending her sentence on the condition that she stay at her Gulshan residence and not leave the country. Since then, her release period has been extended every six months at the family's request.
Earlier, on February 8, 2018, a judicial court sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. Later that year, she was found guilty in another corruption case.
78-year-old former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been suffering from liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart and eye problems for a long time.
