Students of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) asserted that the campus environment is the safest and most conducive to learning when free of student politics. Firm in their stance, they have urged the Vice-Chancellor of BUET to appeal against the High Court's decision.
During a press conference held in front of the M.A. Rashid Administrative Building at BUET on Monday afternoon (April 1), the protesting students shared these views.
Previously, following a writ petition, the High Court had issued a stay order on Monday on a notification banning student politics at BUET. Addressing the press conference, the students stated, "We, the students of BUET, hold utmost respect and trust in the judiciary of our country. Despite the ban on student politics within the BUET campus, the arrival of external political figures and their show of force on the night of March 28, which violates the university's regulations, is considered an infringement by the general students of BUET."
They stated that following the murder of Abrar Fahad on October 7, 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a press conference at the Ganabhaban on October 9, remarked that many institutions have bans on forming organizations, and BUET could impose such a ban if deemed necessary.
The press conference emphasized that the students are united and unwavering in their demand for a campus free of student politics. They argued that student politics, which encourages ragging culture and opens avenues for misuse of power, has never brought anything good for the students and never will. The environment at BUET without student politics was deemed to be the safest and most conducive to learning. They also expressed confidence in their ability to stand united against extremist forces.
The students expressed their trust in their Vice-Chancellor (VC) and made a plea to him to ensure, through all legal processes, that the aspiration of the entire BUET community, including teachers and students, for a campus free of student politics is realized.
Abrar Fahad, a student of BUET, was killed on October 7, 2019, due to the torture inflicted by the then leaders and activists of the Chhatra League. This led to widespread protests among the general students of BUET. Subsequently, on October 11, 2019, BUET authorities issued a notification banning all political organizations and activities on campus. Today, Monday, the High Court has suspended that notification from 2019.
