The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has upgraded Cyclone Remal to a severe cyclone and advised Mongla and Payra ports to hoist the highest danger signal, No. 10.
As the cyclone intensifies over the northwest Bay of Bengal, this urgent warning was issued in a forecast published on the Met Office website this morning.
As of 6 AM today, Cyclone Remal was located 400 km southwest of Chattogram Port, 300 km southwest of Cox's Bazar, 330 km south of Mongla, and 295 km south of Payra.
Cyclone Remal is expected to intensify further as it continues moving north, with maximum sustained winds near the cyclone's center reaching 64 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 130 kilometers per hour.
Remal is causing extremely rough seas near its center.
Coastal districts including Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, and nearby islands and low-lying areas may experience tidal surges eight to twelve feet above normal, potentially leading to widespread flooding.
Additionally, the entire country is expected to experience heavy rainfall due to the cyclone's influence.
