Cyclone Remal makes landfall, weakens as it moves northward

Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal is forecast to hit the coast between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara near Mongla, Bangladesh, this evening between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, as per the latest update from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

At midday, Cyclone Remal was located approximately 335 km southwest of Chattogram Port, 315 km southwest of Cox's Bazar Port, 220 km south of Mongla port, and 200 km south of Payra port.

In anticipation of Cyclone Remal's impact, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Md Mohibur Rahman, today declared the cancellation of leave for all officials across ministries, divisions, and subordinate offices.

A special notification has warned that heavy rainfall from Cyclone Remal could trigger landslides in the hilly regions of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachari. Local residents in these vulnerable areas have been notified of the potential risk.

The cyclone's center is expected to generate sustained winds of 90 kph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kph, within a 64 km radius. The sea near the cyclone's center will remain very rough.

BMD had earlier asked Mongla and Payra ports to hoist great danger signal No. 10.

The coastal districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur and their islands and chars will come under Great danger Signal nine (r) nine.

As the cyclone intensifies over the northwest Bay of Bengal, this urgent warning was issued in a forecast published on the Met Office website this morning.

All fishing boats and trawlers operating in the north Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been instructed to stay in port until further notice.
