Gas supply shortage to persist this month

Gas supplies will likely not increase this month as the damaged floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)--owned by Summit Group requires repairs abroad. T

The company expects the FSRU to return to Bangladesh within three weeks after repairs in either Singapore or the Middle East, the group announced yesterday.

Bangladesh typically receives gas from two FSRUs with a combined capacity of 1,100 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd).

However, the recent accident significantly reduced the gas supply to 600 mmcfd. This incident is particularly noteworthy as the affected FSRU had just resumed operations in mid-April after a two-and-a-half-month maintenance period in Singapore.

Overall, Petrobangla, the national oil company, is currently able to supply approximately 2,600 mmcfd, which falls short of the national demand of 3,800 mmcfd.

Assessments by Bureau Veritas, certification societies, and international inspectors have determined that the vessel is ready to discharge all onboard liquefied natural gas (LNG) before undergoing repairs.

The damage sustained was significant, caused by a large steel structure striking the FSRU during Cyclone Remal last month.

The collision tore a hole in the vessel's outer hull, about one meter below the waterline, causing water to flood into the ballast tanks, said Summit’s statement.

However, the crew, operators, and owners of the vessel, together with the Summit team, worked tirelessly around the clock, despite the harsh monsoon weather, to secure the vessel and its LNG cargo, the statement added.

Their courageous and determined efforts successfully prevented the loss of the valuable cargo.
