Canada denies sending election observers

The High Commission of Canada in Dhaka stated on Monday (January 8) via the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) that the Government of Canada has not dispatched any election observers to monitor the 12th parliamentary election of Bangladesh. The two individuals who purportedly observed the election and delivered a speech, posing as Canadian lawmakers, were found to have no affiliations with the country.

The High Commission said, "The Government of Canada has not deployed any election observers to monitor Bangladesh's January 7 national election. Any individual who identifies as a Canadian observer is acting independently. Their views have not been endorsed by the Government of Canada."

The government and the Election Commission invited observers from various nations to oversee the voting process. Among them were two purported Members of Parliament from Canada, Chandrakant Arya and Victor Oh. Following Sunday's polling, these two individuals shared their experience observing the election at the Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka during the evening, praising the election's atmosphere.
