Allegations of deceased casting votes spark election controversy

The 12th National Assembly election, held on January 7, has become a topic of widespread discussion. Boat candidates supported by the Awami League, along with their dummy candidates, have raised allegations of irregularities in the election process. Music artist Momtaz Begum, a candidate backed by the boat symbol, claimed that deceased individuals and those currently living abroad cast their votes.

During a press conference at the party's central office in Nayapaltan on Friday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stated, "The cat is out of the bag," revealing details of all the alleged misconduct. For a considerable period, both Bangladeshis and the BNP have accused Sheikh Hasina of being a vote thief. Now even members of the Awami League are echoing the claim stating, "Sheikh Hasina is a vote thief."

He said, 'On the day of the election, the Chief Election Commission was taking a nap. Awami League, their dummies and the partner of the dummies have started burning their own house after the results of the rigged election. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself admitted that the voting took place at night on Wednesday and said, 'No one can complain about casting votes at night'. By saying these, they want to resolve their party's internal disputes, but they are failing. The defeated leaders of Awami League are giving Sheikh Hasina the title of prime minister of illegal vote. In press conferences, they themselves are presenting the facts that the vote was rigged. Until now, all the people of the country have said, we have said. And now they themselves are talking about all the processes of vote rigging in the last three elections.

Renowned folk singer Momtaz Begum, who previously discussed in the Parliament the idea of selling electricity in the streets via vendors, pointed out the reasons for her electoral defeat, stating, "Votes are even cast on behalf of the deceased and people living abroad."

During a staff meeting at her residence in Purbabhakum, Singair upazila of Manikganj last Tuesday evening, Momtaz expressed, "Abnormal votes were cast in the polling stations of Baldhara, Baira Union, and Singair municipality in Singair upazila. Votes of the expatriates and those who have passed away were cast. Despite success in other areas, my defeat can be attributed to irregularities in these specific locations."

Abdus Sobhan Golap, the defeated candidate from the Awami League and the campaign secretary of the party, commented, "The election was marred by fraudulent practices fueled by some mysterious force. The thieves had a full monopoly over vote rigging."

Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, the unsuccessful Awami League candidate for the Barguna-1 constituency, has officially lodged a written complaint with the District Returning Officer, challenging the outcome of the polls on Tuesday. In the complaint, he alleges, "The results from numerous polling stations in Sadar Upazila were compiled at Sadar Upazila itself. The results from 16 polling stations lack the signatures of centre polling agents. Upon examining the result sheet, it appears to have been written by a single individual. I am confident that I won. However, my results have been manipulated by creating a conspiratorial result sheet."

A leader from one of the defeated parties said, “Sheikh Hasina has orchestrated a farce. To fulfill her desire to remain in power, she used us as a ladder and has now discarded us.” Defeated candidates are publicly disclosing who was elected by paying what amount of money.
