‘Not Just Numbers’: The 266 lives lost in student quota protests so far
266 lives lost!
The tally of deaths from recent violent student protests is still being compiled, as new fatalities—resulting from severe injuries sustained and subsequent hospitalizations—are added daily.
Additionally, allegations of law enforcers and ruling party activists confiscating death registers from hospitals and intimidating families to conceal deaths have obstructed the accurate determination of the total number.
Despite these challenges, documentation efforts by individual researchers, organizations, and media outlets are proceeding vigorously.
Clashes erupted on July 15th across Bangladesh, but no deaths were initially reported.
However, fatalities began to be reported on the 16th, then again on the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st, with none reported on the 17th. A number of individuals later succumbed to their injuries while receiving hospital treatment.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has confirmed 147 deaths, while “Students Against Oppression,” the leading group in the student protests, has published a list of 266 fatalities.
Within 36 hours of starting their data collection, the organization has confirmed this number of casualties. However, their data is incomplete, they say, due to limited access to some hospitals and the fact that many deceased individuals were never brought to medical facilities.
They estimate the actual death toll could exceed a thousand.
They also reported that numerous victims of law enforcement shootings were buried without being taken to hospitals.
Additionally, some bodies brought to hospitals with confirmed deaths were not officially recorded but were instead released to relatives for burial without autopsies.
Numbers revealed by reputed media
The New York Times on July 27 ran a report with the headline: “All we think of his him’: Putting names and faces to Bangladesh carnage.
According to The New York Times, after the partial lifting of Bangladesh's recent communications blackout, a grim digital yearbook of those killed during the brutal crackdown on student protests surfaced online.
“It put names and faces to days of carnage unleashed by government forces seeking to quell what had begun as a peaceful demonstration against quotas that reserve sought-after government jobs for specific groups. Conservative estimates put the death toll at near 200,” The newspaper of record of the United States said.
Meanwhile, a report from Prothom Alo, the country's largest daily newspaper, revealed that students and workers make up the majority of those who died during the quota reform movement and the ensuing violence and clashes.
Approximately 75 percent (113) of the deceased were children, teenagers, and young adults.
Most of the deceased sustained bullet wounds to the upper parts of their bodies—specifically the abdomen, chest, and head. Typically, law enforcers, when compelled, aim at the legs and avoid indiscriminate firing. However, this time, a different pattern was observed.
Prothom Alo has gathered reports of 210 deaths in the clashes from various sources, including hospitals, relatives, and those who transported the bodies.
Detailed information on age, occupation, type of injury, and the location of the injuries or fatalities was available for 150 of these individuals.
The analysis reveals that 19 of the deceased are children and adolescents, including a 4-year-old. Additionally, 94 individuals were between 18 and 29 years old, 21 were aged 30 to 39, and 16 were approximately 40 years old.
In this analysis, individuals under 18 years old are classified as children, while those up to 29 years old are categorized as youths.
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the youth age range is defined as 15 to 29 years, as noted by Mainul Islam, a professor in the Population Sciences Department at Dhaka University.
‘Lethal weapons used’
Prothom Alo interviewed two security analysts regarding the 150 confirmed deaths. One analyst, speaking anonymously, revealed that data analysis indicates a higher participation of students and low-income individuals in the protests, with less involvement from political activists.
Security analyst Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain asserted that lethal weapons were used to suppress the protests, highlighting the unusual presence of Chinese rifles typically reserved for military and paramilitary forces, being carried by regular police.
He condemned the use of such lethal force against unarmed protesters, stating it is unheard of outside of war zones.
Amnesty International, having confirmed through independent verification that “lethal weapons” were employed to suppress the student protests, has called for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation.
The organization urged that a prompt and impartial inquiry be conducted into all human rights violations committed by security forces, especially the numerous deaths of protesters. It stressed that those responsible must be held fully accountable.
