In nearly 40-degree heat, the residents of the capital are suffering. Alongside a decrease in vehicular traffic, there has also been a notable reduction in pedestrian movement in the city, especially around busy points during the afternoon, which often appear almost without signals. In this situation, for quite some days, arrangements for drinking water and sherbet for pedestrians have been noticeable in various parts of the country including the capital Dhaka. Initiatives have been taken by various political, social, and voluntary organizations including Dhaka WASA and Kishore Kantha Reader's Forum for the public good.
However, this time the posters of AFM Bahauddin Nasim, the Organizing Secretary of Awami League and MP for Dhaka-8 constituency, were also noticeable. On Wednesday at 1:30 PM, several local Awami League leaders and activists were seen seated in a circle under the flyover near Khilgaon Amtala Mosque, next to a huge banner featuring Nasim's image, with a group of schoolgirls in uniform nearby, and a few water jars on a van. This initiative to provide free drinking water was taken on behalf of the MP, but no common people were seen there at the time.
At Fakirapool corner, amidst intense heat, the scene of Nasim’s noble effort was visible with three water jars on top of the van. The jar on top of the filter seemed somewhat empty. Nearby, hidden partially in the shade next to an electricity pole, was a large water tank of Dhaka WASA.
A van was also spotted at the entrance of Fakirapool Culvert Road, but due to the heat, no pedestrians were seen standing there. A passerby commented during a photo session, "This water has turned into fire. If people drink it, their throats will burn."
He said, "People don't stand around on the roads anymore. Everyone is rushing to their work. No one has time to stand and look at an MP's face here." Meanwhile, some pedestrians have described MP Bahauddin Nasim’s initiative as "for show." Others said that he has focused more on his own publicity than on the initiative. Moreover, on Wednesday, he was also seen planting saplings at another event.
