The Election Commission (EC) desires an election free from the influence of ministers and MPs in the sixth Upazila Parishad elections. Additionally, the administration and police have been instructed to carry out their duties steadfastly without fear of transfers. These directives were given at a law enforcement meeting held at the Election Building in Agargaon on Thursday regarding the Upazila Parishad election, according to sources.
At the meeting, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal stated that the Upazila elections must be conducted properly at any cost. He emphasized the importance of conducting the Upazila elections in a manner that reaffirms the presence of democracy in Bangladesh, and that the elections are conducted as they should be. He noted that a failure in the Upazila elections could undermine the democratic continuity established by the parliamentary elections on January 7.
The meeting also addressed concerns about potential transfers of officials in charge of elections due to non-compliance with upper echelons' directives. The Commission assured that if any recommendation for transfer comes from the higher authorities, it would be properly verified and decided upon based on evidence. They reassured that there is no need to worry and that being transferred is a part of the job and is preferable to being subservient.
Moreover, it was discussed how the administration can take measures to prevent the spread of black money through mobile financial services during elections. Instructions were provided by the Commission on necessary actions to take in this regard.
The meeting extensively discussed the influence of ministers and MPs in the elections. It was noted that many within the Awami League have nominated their own relatives or close associates as candidates, ignoring party directives. They are accused of misusing their power to influence the administration to work in favor of their family candidates and applying pressure if their wishes are not met. Threats of transfer and obstacles in career advancement are reported if the administration does not comply.
