India and Bangladesh started exchanging information on transboundary river floods

India has begun work on the transboundary rivers flowing into Bangladesh under the Joint River Commission, with the start of the monsoon season on May 1. The stations identified for this purpose monitor water levels, forecast levels, flow, and rainfall data for rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Barak, Manu, Gomti, Teesta, Jaldhaka, Torsa, Mahananda, and Ganges. This information exchange, overseen by the Bangladesh-India Joint River Commission, aims to provide flood forecasts and warnings on Bangladeshi territory.

This data exchange has been significantly helpful to Bangladesh, as stated in a document related to flood information in Bangladesh. At Bangladesh's request, the flood information exchange system has been periodically reviewed and updated. Currently, data from designated Indian stations during the flood season is being sent continuously to Bangladesh.

Previously, the designated period for flood data exchange was from May 1 to October 15. To accommodate late monsoon floods, this period was extended to October 31 starting in 2022.

Last year, to facilitate uninterrupted and timely flood forecasting and warnings, a WhatsApp group was established involving relevant officials from both Bangladesh and India. This group was reactivated on May 1.
