Sylhet, June 1 (UNB) Low-lying areas in Sylhet city have been inundated due to flash floods triggered by the onrush of water from upstream and rise in water level of different rivers, leaving 4,000 families stranded.
 
The local administration has opened some shelters in the city for the flood-hit people.
 
Sylhet City Corporation's Acting Mayor Mokhlesur Rahman Kamran, councilors and city corporation officials visited the flood-affected areas including Taltola, Subhanighat and Uposhohor on Friday.
 
Around 40 families of Matin Mia colony have taken shelter at an empty building and Kishori Mohon Government Primary School.

Sajlu Laskar, public relations officer of the city corporation, said dry foods were distributed among the flood-hit people on Friday.
 
All preparations have been taken to tackle the flood situation, said acting mayor Kamran.
 
According to a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) report on Friday, water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in rising trend, which may continue in the next 72 hours.  
 
Water levels in the Ganges-Padma are in a receding trend, which may remain steady in the next 48 hours, it said.
 
Water levels of the major rivers in the north-eastern region of the country are in rising trend, which may remain steady in the next 24 hours and the flood situation in Sylhet district may improve in 24 to 48 hours, the report said.
