Renowned Bangladeshi photojournalist Shahidul Alam
returned his honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London in
protest of the university's alleged ties to companies supporting Israel's
actions in Gaza. Alam, known for his criticism of Israel's actions in
Gaza, received the honor in 2022 for his photography and activism. He has garnered global recognition for his work and
is noted for transforming Dhaka into a photography hub. Recently, inspired by protests at Columbia
University, students at various Western universities have called for divestment
from companies supporting Israel and severing ties with Israel itself. Alam was disappointed with the university's response
to student protests demanding the university cut ties with such
companies. He highlighted the disconnect between the university
administration and the student body's stance on the issue. Alam, the first Asian to lead World Press Photo's international jury, emphasized his inability to remain associated with an organization that stifles voices protesting against what he perceives as genocide in Gaza. Alam also expressed disappointment with UAL's administration, citing its connections with Israeli-affiliated companies and institutions.
