Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed grave concerns today over recent revelations concerning the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and RAB chief Benazir Ahmed, who allegedly accumulated significant illicit wealth and property by exploiting their state-granted authority.
The anti-corruption watchdog emphasized that the unchecked abuse of power by high-ranking officials not only raises alarm but also mirrors the creation of uncontrollable figures like Benazir, ultimately weakening the state's accountability.
TIB urged for immediate legal action against those who aid and abet such power abuses. Furthermore, they demanded equitable compensation for individuals coerced by the former police chief into forcefully selling their land.
Reports of the former police chief's vast illegal wealth and property holdings continue to emerge, with allegations that these were obtained through intimidation, hostage-taking, and exploitation of minorities.
Benazir allegedly used personnel from his agency and other state-run bodies to carry out these illegal activities.
Calling this abuse of power by a law enforcement officer "outrageous," the TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators and fair compensation for victims who were forced to sell their land under duress.
He also expressed concern about the obstruction of justice for victims, emphasizing the need for accountability and restitution.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman questioned how Benazir and his family managed to leave the country despite facing serious corruption allegations. Media reports indicate the former police chief withdrew significant funds before fleeing, raising suspicions of collusion, potential involvement of bank officials in money laundering, and the superficiality of investigations against him.
The TIB chief emphasized that justice requires not only prosecuting the former police chief but also holding those who aided and abetted him accountable.
He also expressed concern that a powerful faction continues to protect Ahmed, highlighting the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the matter.
