Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) strongly denounces the recent statement by the Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) concerning journalism and media.

TIB believes the statement is a direct assault on press freedom, specifically aimed at suppressing reports on corruption cases involving former high-ranking police officials.

TIB's Executive Director, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, harshly criticized the BPSA statement, stating that it raises serious concerns about potential efforts within the police force to protect those accused of corruption.

He further emphasized that the statement not only threatens press freedom but also violates citizens' constitutional right to information. Dr. Iftekharuzzaman characterized the BPSA's response as an attempt to deny the reality of the situation.

Dr. Zaman strongly criticized the BPSA's claim that reporting corruption tarnishes the police image. He argued that the media's thorough investigations into corruption allegations against former top police officials warrant a more robust response than simply claiming damage to the police force's reputation.

This weak response, Dr. Zaman suggested, raises doubts about the police's ability and commitment to address corruption within its ranks.

A more effective approach, Dr. Zaman contended, would be to promptly initiate an internal investigation or support an independent probe into these serious allegations. This would demonstrate the police force's dedication to combating corruption and upholding its integrity.

While acknowledging the police force's contributions to the country, Dr. Zaman emphasized that these contributions cannot be used to excuse abuses of power or corruption.

Allowing such actions, he argued, raises serious ethical concerns about the law enforcement agency.

According to news reports, following the statement from the Police Service Association, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ensure that the media exercise caution when publishing news about the police force.

TIB has termed this as an ominous signal, not only for media freedom in the country but also for the entire accountable democratic system.
