Supreme Court to hear appeal against compensation for Tareque Masud's family on July 9
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has scheduled a hearing on July 9 to review the appeal against the High Court's decision to compensate the family of renowned filmmaker Tareque Masud, who was killed in a road accident.
A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan conducted the hearing on Wednesday, July 3. Barrister Sara Hossain appeared on behalf of Tareque Masud's family.
The Appellate Division's hearing on July 9 stems from a fatal road accident on August 13, 2011, in the Joka area of Manikganj's Ghior Upazila, where filmmaker Tareque Masud and ATN News CEO Mishuk Munier tragically lost their lives.
The microbus they were traveling in collided with another vehicle on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, resulting in the deaths of five others. A case was subsequently filed by the police.
The legal proceedings surrounding the 2011 accident began on February 13, 2013, when the families of Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier filed separate cases under Section 128 of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, seeking compensation from the bus owner, driver, and insurance company.
The cases were initially filed at the Manikganj District Judge's Court but were later transferred to the High Court on October 3, 2013, following an application under Article 110 of the Constitution.
Despite initial rulings against the transfer of the cases to the High Court, both were eventually transferred to the Manikganj District and Motor Claims Tribunal on October 29, 2014.
On December 3, 2017, the High Court ordered a compensation of 40,617,754.52 BDT to be paid to Tareque Masud's family. However, the bus owners appealed this decision, leading to a lengthy legal battle.
The appeal hearing against the High Court's compensation ruling finally commenced on October 11, 2023, seven years after the tragic accident that claimed the life of filmmaker Tareque Masud.
