ASK reports 145 Journalists subjected to torture and harassment in the first half of 2024

A report by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) reveals that at least 145 journalists faced torture, harassment, lawsuits, and threats during the first half of 2024.

The report, released on Thursday, compiled from national newspapers, online news portals, and ASK sources, also highlighted instances of journalists being obstructed in their work.

One such case involved Shafiuzzaman Rana, a correspondent for the national daily Desh Rupantor, who was assaulted while reporting on a story.

Rana had requested information from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) regarding the purchase of computers and laptops for an Annual Development Program (ADP) project.

On March 5, 2024, the UNO established a mobile court that sentenced him to six months in jail following a dispute over the withholding of information.

ASK asserted that Article 39 of the constitution ensures the rights to freedom of speech, expression, and press.

"The act of imprisoning a seasoned journalist through the use of a mobile court, abusing authority, is unwarranted and unexpected," stated ASK.

"There have been previous instances where journalists were swiftly sentenced via mobile courts, which undermines media freedom and creates a climate of fear and uncertainty in the execution of journalistic duties."

In addition, ASK reported that a minimum of 46 individuals died while in prison, and at least eight people died while in police custody.

Giving references to recent newspaper articles, ASK reported at least two deaths under police custody, raising allegations of abuse and torture.

In Jashore, Afroza Begum, 40, died after being detained by police. Her family claims she was tortured and killed. Police state she fell ill while in custody and died after being transferred to a hospital.

In Bhairab, Suraia Begum, 52, died while under the custody of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Her family alleges she was tortured during detention and interrogation, leading to her death.

Furthermore, there were at least 41 fatalities and 3,736 injuries resulting from 440 incidents of political violence, according to ASK.
