National consultation held to assess AI readiness of Bangladesh
The ICT Division of Bangladesh, in collaboration with UNESCO and Aspire to Innovate-a2i, hosted a national consultation today to assess the nation's readiness for the safe, ethical, and trustworthy use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The event, titled "National Stakeholder Consultation on Assessing AI Readiness of Bangladesh," brought together government officials, development partners, academics, private sector representatives, and civil society members at the BCC Auditorium in Dhaka.
Bangladesh is committed to harnessing AI for innovation and achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event featured presentations and panel discussions on the potential risks of AI technologies, the importance of ethical AI development, and global governance of AI. Experts from UNESCO, UNDP, the World Bank, and a2i shared insights on AI policies and practices.
Breakout sessions focused on the ethical implementation of AI in different sectors, referencing the UNESCO Global Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
The consultation emphasized the need for AI technologies to align with public welfare and adhere to international norms and standards. The discussions highlighted the importance of considering ethical dimensions in AI development and ensuring that AI systems protect human rights and dignity.
Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address AI's ethical challenges, involving technology, policy, regulation, and international cooperation. He stressed the importance of ensuring AI technologies bridge the digital divide.
ICT Secretary Md. Shamsul Arefin and Cabinet Division Secretary Md. Mahmudul Hossain Khan reiterated the government's commitment to harnessing AI's benefits for all.
a2i Project Director Md. Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan highlighted the government's ongoing work on AI policies and laws,with a focus on ethics.
International representatives from the European Union, UNESCO, and UNDP expressed their support for Bangladesh's efforts and emphasized the importance of a multi-dimensional approach to AI readiness.
UNESCO Assistant Director-General Gabriela Ramos emphasized that AI is a social issue, not just a technological one,and that its development should serve human goals.
