The bank account of Prime Minister Hasina's former personal assistant has been freezed

The Bangladesh Bank has ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Jahangir Alam, a former personal assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, his wife Kamrun Nahar, and any associated organizations.

Banks and financial institutions have been instructed to provide all relevant account information within five days.

This action follows directives issued yesterday by the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) regarding e-banking. The accounts will be suspended for 30 days under the Anti-Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, to investigate potential money laundering activities.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a press conference to discuss her recent visit to China. During the conference, she raised concerns about corruption and revealed details about the financial holdings of a former employee who had worked at her residence.

After that the regulator took the initiative to freeze the account of Jahangir Alam.

Jahangir Alam served as the Prime Minister's personal assistant for nearly two consecutive terms, and briefly afterward. Following allegations against him, he was relieved of his duties.

Despite this, he continued to be involved in activities inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of someone in such a role.

In December of last year, the Prime Minister's Office issued a specific notification regarding Jahangir Alam, clarifying that he no longer has any association with the Prime Minister or her office.

Jahangir Alam resides in Naharkhil village, Khilpara Union, Chattak Upazila, Noakhali. Previously, he held the position of vice-president of the Noakhali district Awami League.
