TIB calls for specific time-bound roadmap to enforce PM’s declaration against corruption

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has welcomed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's recent disclosure of action taken against a former employee who amassed a significant amount of wealth, viewing it as a testament to her commitment to combating corruption.

During a press conference on July 14, the Prime Minister revealed that she had taken action against a former household employee who had accumulated an estimated 400 crore taka.

This disclosure followed a series of high-level corruption cases involving individuals allegedly abusing their power or connections for personal gain.

TIB Executive Director, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, praised the Prime Minister's actions as a positive indicator of political will, stating, "The Prime Minister has in reality expressed her dismay and discomfort towards the culture of normalization of amassing illegal wealth through abuse of power in the name of being associated with her or by individuals in other high positions in the government."

While commending the Prime Minister's commitment, TIB has urged the government to establish a clear and time-bound roadmap to combat corruption, consistent with the Prime Minister's "Zero Tolerance" declaration and the ruling party's election manifesto.

The organization emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to address the pervasive issue of corruption at all levels of government.

Dr. Zaman stressed the importance of rooting out such corrupt elements, regardless of their proximity, emphasizing that combating corruption enhances rather than tarnishes the government's reputation.

Dr. Zaman also noted that the PM’s statement dispelled the misconception that addressing high-level corruption undermines the government’s credibility.

He underscored the importance of the government adopting a clear and time-bound roadmap for the comprehensive implementation of the Prime Minister's zero tolerance commitment and the ruling party's electoral promises.

Such a step, he emphasized, would help address mounting public concerns regarding the pervasive extent of corruption and impunity effectively.
