Barishal,
July 16 (UNB)- Students from various educational institutions in Barishal have
taken to the streets in protest against attacks on those demanding quota system
reform. They have blocked different points of the Dhaka-Barishal highway,
effectively bringing the city to a standstill.
Students from BM College
and Infra Polytechnic Institute blocked the Dhaka-Barishal highway near the
Nathullabad bus terminal, around 11:30 am, halting all types of vehicular
movement, while Barishal Polytechnic Institute students chanted slogans for
quota reforms.
Students from
Sher-e-Bangla Medical College blocked the Barishal-Kuakata highway at Amtala
Mor, demanding justice for the attacks on students nationwide and calling for
quota system reforms.
Despite a heavy police
presence at each blockade point, no attempts have been made to hinder the
protestors. In the morning, some Chhatra League activists attempted to disrupt
the protest at BM College, but the police intervened and removed them. The
blockade continued at all points at 12:15 pm.
Fazlur Rahman,
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police, said that no
major untoward incidents have occurred and that they are monitoring the
situation peacefully.
