Child injured among six in Shanir Akhra clash following reported assault on police
A two-year-old child was among six people shot and hospitalized during a two-hour clash near Shanir Akhra in Dhaka's Jatrabari area.
The child was reportedly shot inside a residential gate. Police say the clash, which followed an alleged "mob assault" on police, was not related to the ongoing student-led quota reform movement.
Assistant Commissioner Md Alauddin of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Wari zone reported that police reinforcements were deployed to various locations in response to the escalating tension.
The conflict began around 5:15 pm when a group attacked police officers in the Shanir Akhra area, injuring four.
The clash continued for about two hours until additional police forces arrived, according to ADC Alauddin.
Police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to regain control of the situation, resulting in the temporary closure of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
ADC Alauddin confirmed that several bystanders were injured in the clash, in addition to police and attackers.
Deputy Commissioner Md Iqbal Hossain of Wari Division clarified that those involved in the Shanir Akhra clash were not students and there is no evidence to suggest they were protesting for quota reform.
Inspector Zakir Hossain from Jatrabari Police Station (Investigation) reported that several vehicles were vandalized during the clashes.
The injured individuals have been identified as Shohag (27), Faysal (27), Mahim Ahmed Piyash (17),Monirul (20), Rahid (2), and Babu Mia (40).
Babu Mia, a resident of Shanir Akhra, described how his two-year-old son Rahid was injured.
He said that during the clash, he brought Rahid near the collapsible gate of their ground-floor apartment when the child began crying. At that moment, gun pellets struck him in the face and hit Rahid in the chest.
