BNP backs nationwide shutdown called by quota reform protesters
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has pledged its full support for the nationwide shutdown scheduled for Thursday, called for by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
The shutdown is in protest of the recent attacks on university students, which have resulted in at least six deaths.
During a virtual press briefing on Wednesday night, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the party's full support for the nationwide shutdown scheduled for Thursday.
Rizvi stated that the decision was made during a meeting of the BNP standing committee. He urged people from all walks of life to participate in the shutdown and make it a success.
Earlier, Hasnat Abdulla, coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, called for a nationwide shutdown on Thursday.
The movement demands justice for those killed during recent protests and an end to violence on campuses. Abdulla specified that only hospitals and emergency services would be exempt from the shutdown, and no vehicles except ambulances would be allowed on the roads.
He urged students from all educational institutions to ensure the program's success.
The protest comes in the wake of a series of violent clashes that have resulted in at least six deaths, primarily of students.
