Jahangirnagar University blackout raises fear of BCL attack among students
A blackout at Jahangirnagar University's dormitories sparked fear among students of a potential crackdown.
The power outage began around 10:30 pm and continued until at least 11:35 pm, according to our correspondent in Savar.
Notably, the Dairy Farm area opposite the campus retained electricity. Around midnight, a significant police presence with armored vehicles was observed outside the university's main entrance.
Clashes erupted at Jahangirnagar University early today between quota reform protesters, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members, and police, resulting in dozens of injuries.
Some of the injured are in serious condition, according to our Savar correspondent who visited Enam Medical College Hospital, where most of the injured are being treated.
Among those injured are at least four media workers and a JU teacher.
Witnesses and protesters report that the clashes began around midnight when BCL activists, accompanied by outsiders wearing helmets and carrying rods and sharp weapons, attacked protesters staging a sit-in in front of the VC's residence.
The sit-in was in response to earlier attacks on campus that left at least 100 students injured.
Meanwhile, amid the chaos, the vice chancellor and senate members reportedly left the new administrative building around 7:00 pm.
The campus remains tense, exacerbated by a power outage. Protesters fear potential police raids or attacks by Chhatra League members under cover of darkness.
Some students have fled the campus, while others remain. Repeated attempts to reach JU Proctor Professor Mohammad Alamgir Kabir for comment were unsuccessful.
