BNP calls for “national unity” with the one-point demand for government overthrow

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a call for "national unity" with the primary objective of ousting the current government.

On Friday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir released a statement titled "BNP’s Call for National Unity" to the media, urging all democratic political parties, social and cultural organizations, individuals, and forces to unite and form a "national unity" based on the single demand of overthrowing the "illegitimate, fascist Hasina government."

This call to action, said Mirza Fakhrul, is seen as crucial for the broader national interest, the restoration of democracy and voting rights, and the liberation of the oppressed people and the nation.

In his statement, the BNP Secretary General further said, “We call upon all allied parties and coalitions of the simultaneous movement led by the BNP, all political parties from both the left and the right, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other religion-based and Islamic political parties and organizations, to unite for national unity.”

He added, “Due to time and communication constraints, consent can be given through the statement. A joint statement with the signatures of all those who have agreed will be issued soon.”

He said that this “historic declaration and document of national unity will, Insha Allah, expedite the liberation of the country and the nation.”
