Writ Petition Filed Seeking High Court Order to Prohibit Shooting of Protesters
In a significant legal move, a writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking an order to prevent law enforcement agencies from shooting at protesters. This petition comes amidst ongoing protests and heightened tensions in the country.
The petition also demands the immediate release of six quota reform movement coordinators currently in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of the police.
Lawyers Manjur Al Matin Pritom and Aynunnahar Siddiqa submitted the petition, emphasizing the need for judicial intervention to safeguard the rights and safety of protesters.
Anik R Haque, the lawyer representing the writ petitioners, stated, "A High Court bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain will hold a hearing on the writ in the afternoon. The writ seeks an injunction against the use of live ammunition on protesters and calls for the immediate release of six detained protesters."
The legal action highlights growing concerns over the treatment of demonstrators and the use of force by law enforcement during public protests. The quota reform movement has been a point of contention, drawing significant public support and scrutiny.
The High Court's decision on this petition could have far-reaching implications for the conduct of law enforcement agencies and the protection of civil rights during protests. The hearing is expected to address these critical issues and provide clarity on the permissible actions of law enforcement in handling protests.
