Bangladesh Requests UN Support for Investigation into Student Deaths: PM Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that the government will seek foreign technical assistance to ensure a thorough and high-quality investigation into the deaths associated with the recent quota reform movement.

This announcement came during a meeting with Germany's Ambassador Achim Troster at the Prime Minister's official residence, Ganabhaban.

"We will seek foreign technical support for the judicial inquiry committee to ensure that the investigation is comprehensive, high-quality, and meets rigorous standards," the Prime Minister stated.

The judicial inquiry committee, chaired by High Court Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman, has been tasked with examining all fatalities related to the quota reform movement.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Md. Naemul Islam Khan updated journalists, revealing that Bangladesh has reached out to the United Nations (UN) for assistance with this investigation. "The UN has shown interest, and Bangladesh is also keen to collaborate," the Press Secretary noted.

Ambassador Troster reiterated Germany's support for Bangladesh, emphasizing the enduring nature of their relationship.

"Germany has a long-standing relationship with Bangladesh, and it will continue," he affirmed.

He also commended the Prime Minister's recent speech and expressed hope for an independent investigation that would identify and hold accountable those responsible for the violence.

Addressing concerns about delays in visa processing at the German embassy in Bangladesh, Ambassador Troster attributed the issues to resource limitations rather than any lack of goodwill.

He apologized for any inconvenience caused by these delays.

Prime Minister Hasina expressed her satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Germany, highlighting the historical ties that date back to the era of the Father of the Nation and the adoption of several Bangladeshi war children by German families.

"The relationship between Bangladesh and Germany is deeply rooted and remains strong," she remarked.

The German ambassador also conveyed his condolences in advance of Mourning Day on Tuesday, a day designated by the government to honor those who lost their lives, including law enforcement personnel, during the quota reform movement.

This decision was made during the regular Cabinet meeting on Monday.
