HC expresses deep concern over deaths amid protest crackdown
The High Court voiced profound concern on Tuesday regarding the tragic deaths linked to recent student protests in the country, emphasising the gravity of the situation during a hearing on a writ petition.
The petition, filed by two Supreme Court lawyers, seeks the release of six coordinators from the anti-discrimination student movement and an end to the use of live ammunition against protestors nationwide.
The bench, comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon, began the hearing by reviewing a report that highlighted the death of 6-year-old Riya Gope, who was fatally injured by a bullet while at home.
At the outset of the session, prosecutor Anik R Haque brought attention to the heartbreaking case of Riya Gope, stating, "The death of a 6-year-old child is particularly tragic and highlights the severity of the situation." The court echoed this sentiment, remarking, “All these deaths are saddening for all of us.”
However, the court soon shifted focus as Anik R Haque attempted to delve deeper into the emotional aspects of the case. “True. When a person dies, he/she does not belong to any side anymore. A 6-year-old child…” Haque began, but was interrupted by the court. Justice Islam said, “We shall not address emotional issues at the court. We are very ashamed.”
Following this, Anik R Haque proceeded to outline the legal arguments of the writ petition. Senior lawyer Sara Hossain supported the prosecution's case, while additional attorney general SM Munir, Sheikh Mohammad Morshed, and Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury represented the state. Senior lawyers Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Nurul Islam Sujon, Azhar Ullah Bhuiyan, and Shah Manjurul Haque were also present during the proceedings.
The High Court has scheduled a new hearing date for Wednesday to continue deliberations on the matter. The writ petition seeks to address the urgent issue of excessive force used by law enforcement and the detention of student activists, amid a growing outcry over the handling of recent protests.
