Gonojagoron Mancha’s Lucky Akhter joins student protest
In a bold show of solidarity, Gonojagoron Mancha activist Lucky Akhter joined the ongoing student movement against the government's quota system in government jobs.
On Friday, Lucky stood shoulder to shoulder with student protesters who have been rallying since July 1st to demand reforms in the quota system.
The protest, led by a coalition of teachers, students, and citizens from various walks of life, took the form of a foot march named “Droho Jatra.”
The march began at the National Press Club and concluded at the Central Shaheed Minar, with Lucky Akhter actively participating and voicing slogans supporting the students' demands.
This public display of dissent follows a large-scale march to the Shaheed Minar that occurred last Friday, where thousands of people, energized by cultural performances and a speech by former Jahangirnagar University Professor Anu Muhammad, called for change.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as the marchers, inspired by the speeches and cultural displays, united in their call for reform.
The student-led movement has intensified over the past month, with more than 200 people reportedly killed and thousands injured amid violent clashes between police, students, and civilians.
Lucky Akhter, known for her fiery rhetoric and passionate slogans, has been a prominent figure in the activist community. Dubbed the junior “Agni-kannaya” or "daughter of fire," after Agricultural Minister Matia Chowdhury, Akhter has captivated audiences with her stirring calls for justice and equality.
The Gonojagoron Mancha platform, known for its advocacy and activism, has declared its commitment to continue protests until the execution of Quader Molla’s death sentence is carried out.
This movement gained momentum with activists blocking the Shahbagh intersection, rallying in large numbers since 7 p.m., and erupting into protests upon hearing news of the death sentence.
