“I am on the side of oppressed”: Bangladesh mission chief to European Union tweets
Mahbub Hasan Saleh, mission chief of Belgium and Luxembourg as well as of the European Union, has tweeted in support of the "oppressed."
On Friday (August 2) evening, Bangladesh time, he wrote, "On September 9, 1973, at the Fourth Non-Aligned Movement Conference held in Algiers, Algeria, the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said in his speech, 'The world is today divided into two parts: the oppressors and the oppressed. I am on the side of the oppressed.'"
The Bangladesh ambassador reiterated, "I am on the side of the oppressed."
His tweet appeared amidst ongoing protests across Bangladesh, sparked by the deaths of over 210 people in recent clashes between law enforcement, ruling party activists, and an anti-discrimination student movement.
Saleh's educational background includes a Civil Engineering degree from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a postgraduate diploma in Diplomacy and Trade from Monash University.
Saleh, a career diplomat who joined the Bangladesh Civil Service's Foreign Service branch, has served in various capacities in South Korea, Australia, India, the United States, and the European Union.
Notable roles include Acting High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner to India, and Ambassador to Belgium and the EU.
During his tenure, he facilitated Bangladesh's transition to the EU's GSP Plus scheme, defended the nation's human rights record, and engaged in diplomatic discussions with China regarding bilateral relations.
