Mobile internet, facebook, whatsapp reportedly down as per the government directive
The officials of mobile phone operators said on Sunday that they have received a directive to shut down 4G services.
Facebook and WhatsApp, two widely used social media platforms, are reportedly inaccessible in Bangladesh as of today as social media users reported that they can’t use those without VPN.
The latest move comes amid a new wave of violence as armed members of Awami League and its factions have started shooting over protesters who have come down on the road with one point demand of the resignation of the government.
At least nine people have so far been killed in the violence.
Meanwhile, the inability to access Facebook and WhatsApp coincides with a recent directive from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to suspend 4G mobile internet services.
However, the BTRC has not yet issued an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption.
This latest incident is part of a series of internet service interruptions in Bangladesh, including the temporary blocking of several social media platforms during the quota reform movement in July.
While some services were eventually restored, access to certain platforms has remained limited.
