28 killed, and hundreds injured so far in deadly clashes in the first day of non-cooperation movement
On the first day of the non-cooperation movement declared by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, at least 28 people were killed so far and hundreds were injured as intense clashes erupted across Dhaka and other regions of Bangladesh.
In Sirajganj, at least four people were killed and many others injured during a series of clashes involving protesters, Awami League activists, and police, according to UNB.
The district also experienced widespread destruction, vandalism, and arson, including attacks on police stations and the residences of two lawmakers.
While the identities of the deceased were not immediately known, their bodies have been placed in the morgue at North Bengal Medical College Hospital, as reported by UNB's local correspondent.
According to local accounts, protesters initially assembled on SS Road in Sadar upazila and then attacked the district Awami League office around 11 a.m.
The situation escalated when Awami League supporters attempted to repel the protesters, resulting in one person being killed on the spot.
In Feni, Prothom Alo reported that five people have died in clashes between protesters and activists from the student league, youth league, and Awami League.
The violence started around 2 p.m. on Sunday. Protesters had been rallying in support of the non-cooperation movement in the Mahipal area since the morning.
However, conflict erupted when activists from the student league, youth league, and Awami League arrived with a procession under the Mahipal Bridge around 2 p.m.
The confrontation involved gunfire and explosions from cocktails. The identities of the five deceased have not yet been confirmed. Additionally, at least 10 people, including three journalists, were injured.
The injured and deceased were taken to Feni 250-Bed General Hospital. Medical officer Asif Iqbal stated around 3:30 p.m. that five bodies are currently in the hospital’s emergency department, all having died due to the clashes in Mahipal.
In Munshiganj, two construction workers were fatally shot while en route to work amidst a three-way conflict involving anti-discrimination student protesters, police, and activists from the Awami League and Chhatra League.
At least 30 people sustained injuries, including seven with gunshot wounds, and there were multiple explosions of cocktail bombs.
In Magura, the second fatality of the day occurred, with one person killed and 20 others injured in a confrontation between police, ruling party supporters, and protesters.
Jamuna TV reported additional deaths, including two in Bogura and one in Sirajganj.
In Pabna, three people were killed during the day’s clashes, with two identified as 22-year-olds Mahbul and Jahidul Islam.
Rangpur also witnessed a fatality when a quota protester was killed during a clash with Awami League supporters, according to Prothom Alo.
A TBS correspondent in Sirajganj reported another death amid the ongoing clashes and violence.
In Savar, a body was left at the Dhamrai upazila health complex.
Ahmedul Huq, a resident doctor at the facility, stated to The Daily Star, "Some locals brought the body to the hospital around 1:20 p.m. From what we know, the individual had been deceased for at least an hour and a half before being brought here."
In Barisal, an Awami League leader was killed during the confrontation between protesters and members of the Awami League and Chhatra League.
In Dhaka, unidentified individuals set fire to an ambulance and a motorcycle within the premises of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
Protesters took control of Shahbagh, while men chanting Awami League slogans were observed in Panthapath.
A police vehicle was also ignited in front of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court.
There were reports of gunfire in the Dhanmondi area, where a TBS journalist was attacked with a sharp weapon.
Mirpur was chaotic with ongoing chases and counter-chases.
In Chattogram, where clashes and arson occurred yesterday, shots were reportedly fired at protesters.
Shooting incidents were also reported during the concurrent events organized by protesters and Awami League (AL) supporters in the New Market area of the port city.
