54 killed, and hundreds injured so far in deadly clashes in the first day of non-cooperation movement

On the first day of the non-cooperation movement declared by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, at least 54 people were killed so far and hundreds were injured as intense clashes erupted across Dhaka and other regions of Bangladesh. 

During clashes between Awami League supporters, including its affiliated groups such as BCL and Jubo League, and protesters in Feni, at least five people have been killed.

The Business Standard reported that at least 40 others were injured in the incident that occurred in the Mohipal area along the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.

The bodies of the deceased are being held at Feni General Hospital, according to Dr. Asif Iqbal, the hospital's Resident Medical Officer. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

In Feni, at least three people were killed.

According to Arup Pal, the Resident Medical Officer at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, around 4:00 pm, the hospital had received at least three bodies since the clash began.

Additionally, at least 15 individuals are being treated for injuries at the hospital.

In Cumilla, a youth was shot dead around 1:30 pm near Debidwar Alihaj Ajgor Ali Munshi Girls' High School during a clash between Awami League supporters and its various affiliated groups, including BCL, Jubo League, and protesters.

The incident also resulted in approximately 15 people being injured.

The deceased has been identified as Abdul Razzaque Rubel, 26, son of the late Rafiqul Islam from the Barera area. 

Debidwar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Ali Ehsan informed TBS that Rubel's body was brought to the Upazila Health Complex around 1:30 pm, where he was pronounced dead upon examination.

In a separate incident in Cumilla, a police constable from the Illiotganj Highway Police Outpost was beaten to death. 

The deceased has been identified as Constable Md Ershad Ali, according to Cumilla Highway Region Police Superintendent Md Khairul Alam.

In Munshiganj, three individuals, including two construction workers in their mid-twenties, were shot dead while heading to work amid a three-way clash. Munshiganj General Hospital Supervisor Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal confirmed the deaths of the construction workers.

According to Prothom Alo, a third person was also killed in the violence.

The clashes involved anti-discrimination student protesters, police, and activists from Awami League and Chhatra League. At least 30 people were injured, with seven suffering gunshot wounds, and there were numerous explosions from cocktails.

In Dhaka’s Uttara, at least one student and an Awami League leader were killed.

The student who was killed has been identified as 17-year-old Mahim, according to health officials at Uttara Adhunik Hospital, where Mahim was taken with bullet injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

The deceased Awami League leader has been identified as Anwarul Islam, the former president of Dhaka North AL Ward-1, as confirmed by his brother and former MP Alhaj Habib Hasan in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, at least one student was shot to death in Dhaka's Jigatola. 

The deceased has been identified as Abdullah Siddiqui, 23, a student of Habibullah Bahar Degree College, Prothom Alo reports citing doctors at the DMCH.

In Sirajganj, at least four people were killed and many others injured during a series of clashes involving protesters, Awami League activists, and police. according to UNB.

The district also experienced widespread destruction, vandalism, and arson, including attacks on police stations and the residences of two lawmakers.

While the identities of the deceased were not immediately known, their bodies have been placed in the morgue at North Bengal Medical College Hospital, as reported by UNB's local correspondent.

According to local accounts, protesters initially assembled on SS Road in Sadar upazila and then attacked the district Awami League office around 11 a.m. 

The situation escalated when Awami League supporters attempted to repel the protesters, resulting in one person being killed on the spot.

In Munshiganj, two construction workers were fatally shot while en route to work amidst a three-way conflict involving anti-discrimination student protesters, police, and activists from the Awami League and Chhatra League.

At least 30 people sustained injuries, including seven with gunshot wounds, and there were multiple explosions of cocktail bombs. 

In Magura, the second fatality of the day occurred, with one person killed and 20 others injured in a confrontation between police, ruling party supporters, and protesters.

Jamuna TV reported additional deaths, including two in Bogura and one in Sirajganj.

In Pabna, three people were killed during the day’s clashes, with two identified as 22-year-olds Mahbul and Jahidul Islam.

Rangpur also witnessed a fatality when a quota protester was killed during a clash with Awami League supporters, according to Prothom Alo.

In Savar, a body was left at the Dhamrai upazila health complex. 

Ahmedul Huq, a resident doctor at the facility, stated to The Daily Star, "Some locals brought the body to the hospital around 1:20 p.m. From what we know, the individual had been deceased for at least an hour and a half before being brought here."

In Barisal, an Awami League leader was killed during the confrontation between protesters and members of the Awami League and Chhatra League.
