Six Awami League leaders beaten to death in Narshingdi
At least six Awami League leaders and activists were beaten to death after being chased by protesters in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. The incident took place around 1:30 pm today, Sunday, at a mosque's ablution area adjacent to Madhabdi municipality in Sadar Upazila. The deceased have been identified as Delwar Hossain (Shaheen), Chairman of Char Dighaldi Union Parishad; Delwar Hossain, the younger brother of Sadar Upazila Chairman Anwar Hossain and President of the City Fishermen's League; and Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, former President of the District Volunteer League. Witnesses and local residents reported that around noon today, thousands of protesters blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement. Around 1:00 pm, more than a hundred local Awami League leaders and activists, led by Sadar Upazila Chairman Anwar Hossain, arrived at the scene. The Awami League members urged the protesters to leave the area, but the protesters refused. Tensions escalated when the ruling party leaders and activists opened fire on the protesters, injuring at least four people. Among them, Alamgir (25) and Sumon (30) were treated at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, while the other two were taken to a local private hospital. During the unrest, armed with sticks, the protesters chased the ruling party leaders and activists, who then took refuge inside the large mosque in the municipal area. Inside the mosque’s ablution area, protesters brutally beat at least ten individuals. The deceased included Char Dighaldi Union Parishad Chairman Delwar Hossain, City Fishermen's League President Delwar Hossain, former District Volunteer League President Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, and local labor leader Anisur Rahman, among others.
