91 killed, and thousands injured so far in deadly clashes in the first day of non-cooperation movement

On the first day of the non-cooperation movement declared by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, at least 91 people were killed so far and thousands were injured as intense clashes erupted across Dhaka and other regions of Bangladesh. Throughout the day, the death toll in various locations is as follows: 6 in Narsingdi, 8 in Feni, 8 in Lakshmipur, 22 including 13 police officers in Sirajganj, 4 in Kishoreganj, 6 in Dhaka, 5 in Bogura, 3 in Munshiganj, 4 in Magura, 3 in Bhola, 4 in Rangpur, 3 in Pabna, 5 in Sylhet, 3 including a police officer in Cumilla, 2 in Sherpur, 1 in Joypurhat, 1 in Habiganj, 1 in Keraniganj in Dhaka, 1 in Savar, and 1 in Barishal, according to daily Prothom Alo. In Lakshmipur, clashes and retaliatory attacks occurred between protesters and Awami League leaders and activists amid the anti-discrimination student movement's non-cooperation program. During the violence, eight people, including a college student, were killed by gunfire. This information was confirmed by Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar) Mohammad Sohel Rana to Prothom Alo at around 7:30 pm today. At least five individuals, including a Rangpur City Corporation councillor, have been killed in clashes linked to the ongoing Anti-Discrimination Student Movement today. Additionally, 50 people, including journalists, have been reported injured, according to Samakal. Among the deceased, three have been identified as Haradhan Roy Hara, Ward-4 councillor of Rangpur City Corporation and President of Porsuram Thana AL; Khairul Alam Sabuj, a leader of the Swechasebak League; and Masum, a leader of the Jubo League. The daily Samakal noted that the identities of the remaining two victims have not yet been confirmed. During clashes between Awami League supporters, including its affiliated groups such as BCL and Jubo League, and protesters in Feni, at least eight people have been killed. According to Arup Pal, the Resident Medical Officer at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, around 4:00 pm, the hospital had received at least three bodies since the clash began. Additionally, at least 15 individuals are being treated for injuries at the hospital. In Munshiganj, three individuals, including two construction workers in their mid-twenties, were shot dead while heading to work amid a three-way clash. Munshiganj General Hospital Supervisor Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal confirmed the deaths of the construction workers. According to Prothom Alo, a third person was also killed in the violence. The clashes involved anti-discrimination student protesters, police, and activists from Awami League and Chhatra League. At least 30 people were injured, with seven suffering gunshot wounds, and there were numerous explosions from cocktails. In Dhaka’s Uttara, at least one student and an Awami League leader were killed. The student who was killed has been identified as 17-year-old Mahim, according to health officials at Uttara Adhunik Hospital, where Mahim was taken with bullet injuries and died on the way to the hospital. The deceased Awami League leader has been identified as Anwarul Islam, the former president of Dhaka North AL Ward-1, as confirmed by his brother and former MP Alhaj Habib Hasan in the afternoon. Meanwhile, at least one student was shot to death in Dhaka's Jigatola. The deceased has been identified as Abdullah Siddiqui, 23, a student of Habibullah Bahar Degree College, Prothom Alo reports citing doctors at the DMCH. In Sirajganj, at least four people were killed and many others injured during a series of clashes involving protesters, Awami League activists, and police. according to UNB. The district also experienced widespread destruction, vandalism, and arson, including attacks on police stations and the residences of two lawmakers. and 20 others injured in a confrontation between police, ruling party supporters, and protesters. Jamuna TV reported additional deaths, including two in Bogura and one in Sirajganj. In Pabna, three people were killed during the day’s clashes, with two identified as 22-year-olds Mahbul and Jahidul Islam. Rangpur also witnessed a fatality when a quota protester was killed during a clash with Awami League supporters, according to Prothom Alo. In Savar, a body was left at the Dhamrai upazila health complex. Ahmedul Huq, a resident doctor at the facility, stated to The Daily Star, "Some locals brought the body to the hospital around 1:20 p.m. From what we know, the individual had been deceased for at least an hour and a half before being brought here." In Barisal, an Awami League leader was killed during the confrontation between protesters and members of the Awami League and Chhatra League. At least two people were killed when police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) clashed with protesters in Gopalganj, Sylhet, around 2:00 pm. The deceased have been identified as Taj Uddin, 34, a businessman from Barkut village, and Sani Ahmed, 18, from Shilghat. This information was confirmed by Upazila Health Officer Sudarshan Sen to The Business Standard. However, the cause of their deaths could not be immediately verified. Another fatality was reported around 6:29 pm. The deceased has been identified as Nazmul Islam, 22, from Nischinto village in Dhaka Dakhsin union of Gopalganj. His father, Tayeb Ali, provided this information to TBS. ___
