Speaking to the BBC World Service's Newshour, Sajeeb Wazed Joy revealed that Sheikh Hasina had been contemplating resignation since the previous day. Her decision was driven by concerns for her safety, which her family strongly advocated for amid rising unrest. "She was so disappointed that after all her hard work, for a minority to rise up against her," Joy stated, highlighting the emotional impact of recent events on his mother.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who served as an official adviser to the
Prime Minister until his resignation, praised Sheikh Hasina's accomplishments
during her tenure. "She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over
power, it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today,
it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia. She’s very
disappointed," he remarked, emphasizing the economic progress Bangladesh
experienced under her leadership.
Joy also defended the administration's handling of the unrest, rejecting claims of excessive force used against demonstrators. "You’ve had policemen beaten to death – 13 just yesterday. So what do you expect the police to do when mobs are beating people to death?" he questioned, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement amid the chaos.
