Students propose Dr. Yunus as chief advisor, demand swift government formation

A critical meeting is currently underway at Bangabhaban, where a 13-member delegation from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is engaged in discussions with the President and the heads of the three armed forces.

The meeting, which began Tuesday evening, is focused on addressing the current situation in the country and formulating a framework for the proposed interim government.

As of the latest update at 8:30 PM, the discussions are still ongoing. Among those present are Professor Asif Nazrul from the Department of Law and Professor Tanzimuddin from the Department of International Relations at Dhaka University.

Earlier in the day, the student movement’s key coordinators put forward Nobel Laureate Dr. Mohammad Yunus as their proposed chief advisor for the interim government. In a video released on social media this morning, Nahid Islam, one of the movement's prominent coordinators, confirmed that Dr. Yunus has consented to take on the role given the current circumstances.

Nahid Islam, accompanied by two other coordinators, denounced the ongoing violence, attributing it to "ousted fascists and their collaborators" attempting to undermine the revolution. He emphasized the urgent need for a structured interim government, declaring, “We took 24 hours to announce a framework for the interim government.

However, given the emergency situation, we are announcing it now,” in reference to recent incidents of indiscriminate firing, attacks on temples, and widespread looting.

The movement has called for the formation of an interim government with Dr. Yunus at its helm and is pushing for immediate action from the President to establish this government by morning. They also plan to reveal the names of the remaining interim government members shortly.

Addressing the public, Nahid Islam urged the President to act swiftly to restore law and order, while also announcing that students will continue to demonstrate on the streets to protect their cause. "No government other than the one proposed by the students will be accepted. We have given our blood, been martyred, and we have to fulfill our pledge to build a new Bangladesh," Nahid asserted.

In response to escalating violence and sabotage, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has announced the formation of a 'Committee to Safeguard Public Property and Communal Harmony.' This committee will work to protect local communities, public property, and the nation as a whole.
