Bangladesh Bank officials stage a rare revolt, demanding resignation of governor and other top officials
Over a hundred Bangladesh Bank (BB) officials forcibly entered the
governor's office on Wednesday, leading to the departure of several deputy
governors—a rare event in the history of the central bank.
The officials staged a demonstration in front of the Bangladesh Bank
headquarters in Dhaka's Motijheel, calling for the resignation of all those
holding contractual positions, including the deputy governors, banking advisor,
and governor.
Around 200 BB officials arrived at the deputy governors' offices around 10:30 AM, demanding their immediate resignation. Subsequently, the deputy governors' staff locked the office doors.
BB Spokesperson Mezbaul Haque described the situation as "out of control." This incident follows Sheikh Hasina's resignation as Prime Minister just two days ago, amid escalating protests over security forces' brutality and the deaths of over 300 people, marking the end of her 15-year rule of the Awami League.
Protesters alleged that the deputy governors and governor were aiding bank looters. During the demonstration, the officials compelled Deputy Governor Kazi Sayedur Rahman to resign, while Deputy Governor Md Khurshid Alam departed the office immediately. Policy Advisor Abu Farah Md Nasser also left the Bangladesh Bank office via the backdoor.
