‘My mother has no plan to move elsewhere from India’: Joy
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has stated that she has no plans to move elsewhere from India. He made this remark in an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle. Amid widespread public protests in Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and sought refuge in India. Joy revealed that the resignation decision was made a day before it was announced. "She made the decision a day earlier. Only a few of us knew that she would announce her resignation and that the plan was to ensure a transition of power according to the constitution," Joy said. "However, when the protesters began marching towards the official residence, we were forced to act quickly and advised her to leave immediately due to the urgency of the situation." The quota movement in Bangladesh eventually escalated into a mass uprising, resulting in hundreds of casualties. There have been allegations from various quarters that Sheikh Hasina's government used excessive force to suppress the protesters. Faced with intense agitation, Sheikh Hasina quickly left the country with her sister, Sheikh Rehana. In response to a question about leadership within the Awami League, Sajeeb Wazed Joy stated that there are currently no plans for his return to politics. He said, "Our family has faced coups three times. Each time, we lost everything and had to live abroad. Except for my mother and me, everyone in our family has been living abroad for a long time. We are settled here. We face no difficulties in our lives here; we are accustomed to it." Joy also noted that there has been no decision for Sheikh Hasina to move from India. "Sheikh Hasina is well and currently in Delhi. My sister is with her, as she lives in Delhi. She is doing fine, though she is very upset." Joy added, "She is deeply saddened that the country for which her father sacrificed his life and her family has lost everything, the country she has served time in jail for, worked so hard for, and developed, has now treated her with such disrespect and is even attacking her. None of us could have imagined this." —
