‘‘End the Politics of Vengeance’: Khaleda Zia delivers first public speech in six years
In her first public address since 2018, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called for an end to the "politics of vengeance." "Let us build a Bangladesh rooted in love and peace," the former prime minister said during a virtual address to a BNP rally in Nayapaltan this afternoon (7 August). "We must forge a united Bangladesh from the ruins of a shattered democracy," she continued. Khaleda Zia also expressed her gratitude to all the "brave individuals" who made the seemingly impossible achievable. She stated, "After a prolonged struggle, we have freed ourselves from the fascist and illegitimate government." "I honor the hundreds of martyrs. This victory has opened new possibilities for us," she concluded. The BNP Chairperson further stated, "Students have sacrificed their lives. We must establish a democratic Bangladesh grounded in intelligence, competence, and knowledge. We need to build a Bangladesh free from exploitation and ensure it is inclusive of all religions and castes." "Let us empower our youth to create a modern Bangladesh focused on progress and equality. We should strive to build a knowledge-based society, not one driven by destruction or revenge," she added. Yesterday, President Mohammed Shahabuddin granted Khaleda Zia clemency, commuting her prison sentences. The president issued the order under Article 49 of the Bangladesh Constitution, as noted in a gazette released by the home ministry. Article 49 provides the president with the authority to grant pardons, reprieves, and respites, as well as to remit, suspend, or commute any sentence imposed by any court, tribunal, or other authority. Although the BNP Chairperson has been released, she will be ineligible to participate in elections for the next five years. —-
