New IGP reports human rights violations by some police officials

In his first briefing at the Police Headquarters today, newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam addressed the injuries, deaths, and torture suffered by police officials, attributing these issues to the actions of some unprofessional and overly ambitious officers.

The IGP criticized these officers for not adhering to established principles of force application and for violating human rights. He stated, "It is due to these unprofessional officials that the current violence and casualties have occurred."

Assuring that all murders will be thoroughly investigated, the IGP also emphasized that any police officials involved in human rights violations would face action according to police regulations.

Mainul Islam offered an apology to the public, acknowledging that the police had failed to meet expectations in their handling of the students' peaceful protest against discrimination.

"At this critical moment, I earnestly urge all police members to fully commit to their duties for the benefit of our country and its people," Mainul said.

He added that a directive has been issued for all police personnel to return to their respective police lines, offices, public order management posts, and barracks.

"We aim to start afresh to ensure the safety of citizens. Therefore, all officers are instructed to report back to their workplaces within the next 24 hours, by Thursday evening," he stated.

Mainul also announced that metropolitan police commissioners and district superintendents will establish citizen security committees in their areas, including senior citizens, professionals, student representatives, political figures, and media personnel.

"These committees will play a crucial role in ensuring the security of police stations and their surrounding areas. Their final structure will be developed later," he explained.

To maintain discipline within the police force, he instructed, "I am directing all colleagues to avoid making demands, comments, or replies on social media through personal accounts or any association-related accounts."
